AUV Engineer Position

This position ensures that MBARI’s Dorado class Autonomous Undersea Vehicles (AUVs) operate in a reliable and effective manner. The incumbent assists in design, development, testing, and operation of MBARI’s fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles. Primarily responsibility will be designing, modifying and maintaining microprocessor-based systems for robotic control and data acquisition applications and operating assigned autonomous vehicles. 



Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

Incumbent undertakes a variety of support work in the planning, design, and fabrication of autonomous underwater vehicles, and has primary responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and repair of such equipment as assigned. Incumbent is responsible for the implementation of custom Linux kernels and high level robotic control applications for onboard computers, as well as developing custom microcontroller firmware for various subsystems. Typical applications require custom communications protocols using TCP/UDP, as well as CAN and other serial interfaces (I2C, RS232, SPI, etc). 




Incumbent is responsible for integration of new instrumentation and advanced software algorithms into vehicles, as well as provides engineering on existing vehicle platforms, provides research cruise planning and preparation, mobilization and at-sea operations. 




The position requires the willingness and ability to go to sea and work offshore for up to two months at a time, up to 150 days per year. The majority of these are day trips, although up to three months a year are extended trips 




Reporting Relationships: 



The Operations Engineer (AUV) reports to the Dorado AUV Operations Group Leader. 



Qualifications: 

A minimum of a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline, plus relevant experience in embedded systems development or related field is required. Must be able to appropriately scale and apply formal and informal engineering methodologies. 

Experience designing microprocessor-based systems for robotic control applications, as well as a demonstrated skill in implementing embedded hardware and software for high-reliability, low power systems, is required. Experience in developing custom Linux distributions using Yocto or similar build systems is required. Experience using high level control frameworks such as Robot Operating System (ROS) or similar is highly desired. Experience in developing microcontroller applications on ARM Cortex-M3 or similar processors is highly desired. 




Must be able to work well as part of a team, independently and with diverse groups of people. 




The position requires the ability to lift up to 35 pounds. 




The position requires the willingness and ability to go to sea and work offshore for up to two months at a time, up to 150 days per year.

*ROLES*

The engineer will be in charge of the hardware/software development for 
managing the group of quadrotor UAVs available in our lab. Some examples

- implementation/testing/debugging of state estimation and flight

- integration/testing/debugging of on board computer vision or deep

*SKILLS*

The ideal candidate is expected to have a strong background in software 
engineering (C/C++) for managing and extending the existing software 
framework used in the lab.
Good experience with implementation of state estimation/motion control 
algorithms for mobile robots (in particular quadrotors) is also 
expected, as well as the willingness to master new hardware/software 
tools, to be open to novelties (e.g., new sensors), and to be fond of 
testing robotics algorithms in real conditions.

A M.Sc. degree in robotics, computer science, applied mathematics (or 
related fields) is a minimum requirement, while a Ph.D. degree is a 
plus.  In general, the successful applicant is expected to possess a 
good level of maturity in code development and real implementations of 
robotics algorithms.

The applicant should be proficient in C/C++ and ROS. Good knowledge of:

- Robotic simulator softwares (such as Gazebo or V-REP)
- Matlab/Simulink

Duke University | Opening for staff systems engineer

 Dear robotics community,

The Duke Robotics group has an opening for a staff systems engineer to assist with the development of several robotics projects. We are looking for someone with hardware and software engineering experience who is dedicated and passionate about building extraordinary, reliable robots. This position will be supporting state-of-the-art academic robotics research in labs in several departments, spanning the Pratt School of Engineering and School of Medicine, and will work on a variety of platforms including mobile manipulators, legged robots, industrial robots, quadrotors, robot swarms, motion capture systems, and surgical robots.

The ideal candidate is a "jack-of-all-trades" with the ability to switch between multiple roles, and has experience in the following areas:

- Engineering hardware to specific, detailed electrical and mechanical requirements

- Maintaining complex software systems using modern software engineering practices

- C++, Linux systems, networking, and ROS

- Fabrication and CAD

The responsibilities of this position are to coordinate engineering efforts along multiple projects; to design, develop, and test systems in accordance to project goals; and to assist in using robot systems in research and education.

Starting salary is $50,000-75,000 depending on qualifications and experience, plus benefits. This position will begin with a 1-year contract, which may be renewed thereafter.

Job Description

1. Implement robotics algorithms.
2. Integrate libraries and other software with robotic systems.
3. Ensure software-related functions are stable and reliable.

Position Requirements

1. Experience working in Linux development environments.
2. Strong software engineering skills and capable of adhering to particular coding styles.
3. Experienced working with Git.
4. Very skilled with C++ and knowledge of new standards such as C++11 and C++14. Should be familiar with the following functions:
- Pointer and smart pointer
- Memory alignment and memory management
- STL, Boost
- OOP
- C++ templates
- Linux management tools; able to write some simple shell scripts
- Toolchain and development environment setup; able to write and modify Makefiles
5. Familiar with some dynamic programming languages like Python

Preferred Qualifications

- Familiar with robotics
- Familiar with robotics software frameworks and libraries such as ROS, Moveit, Gazebo, OpenRave, KDL, PCL, OpenCV, etc.
- Familiar with template meta-programming and generic programming
- Familiar with functional programming
- Familiar with some machine-learning methods
- Familiar with compilation pipelines
- Skilled with compiler options
- Skilled with Emacs, Vi, or vim
- Familiar with GDB and debug tools
- Familiar with a dynamic programming language such as Python, Lua, Scheme, etc.
- Familiar with network programming, multithreaded programming, or parallel programming such as CUDA, MPI, OpenMP, etc.
- Familiar with OpenCL
- Familiar with CPU instruction set optimization (SIMD, AVX)
- Involvement in open-source coding projects
- Programming/robotics blogger
